Cenus Hardy Kennedy

February 20, 1870 - January 26, 1927

Cenus Hardy Kennedy was the first U. S. Marshal in the Lake County, TN and the bootheel of Missouri. He never carried a gun but would walk up and place his hand on the shoulder of someone and tell them quietly to come with him to jail. In the bootheel of Missouri the folks had killed several law enforcement officers and no one would take the job as law officer there. They came to Ridgely and asked Cenus to take the job. He moved his family to what is now Caruthersville, Mo. and they lived there for several years while he returned law and order to that part of Missouri. He then returned with his family to Ridgely where he ran for and was elected City Marshal of Ridgely.
